Learning to incorporate change into your life is an important first step towards dealing with depression, anxiety, stress or anger.
There’s been several research articles that support the notion that it is better to face your problems head-on, rather than not think about them. Most people tend to avoid having to deal with the difficult feelings that anxiety, depression, and anger bring up. Many will turn to forms of self-medication to deal with their pain: alcohol, drugs, food and sex. However, long-term, choosing to avoid these feelings prevents you from having positive experiences which can build up over time and eventually lessen, or completely remove, any negative feelings you may have. For example, calling in sick so as not to have to speak in front of a large group of people might be an effective short-term approach. Long-term, you will never have experienced what it feels like to have survived the talk and all the confidence that comes from
proving to yourself that you can do it. With that, your anxiety will continue to dominate you, depression may follow and when forced to give another talk, you will be terrified. Which then leads to deeper depression, etc.
